Asking Someone to Repeat Themselves

Scene: You are on a video call with three people. Tom speaks fast, and you just missed his last sentence. Many learners stay quiet here and hope to catch up later. That is the worst choice. Asking again is normal at work, and nobody will think less of you.
Tom: So we push the deadline to the fifth, and marketing will handle the rest. You: Sorry, Tom, could you say that again? The line was not very clear on my side. Tom: Sure. We move the deadline to the fifth. Marketing takes the rest.
You: Thank you. I have the date. But I did not catch the last part. Who takes the rest? Tom: Marketing does. You: Got it. So marketing owns everything after the fifth. Let me make sure I got that right. Tom: Exactly right.
Notice the second question. You did not say that you understood nothing. You named the part you missed. That helps the speaker a lot. Now he can repeat only the small piece, not the whole thing. Then you said it back in your own words, and he confirmed it.
Keep three short lines ready. Sorry, could you say that again? I did not catch the last part. Let me make sure I got that right. Use them early in the call. It is much easier to ask now than to fix a mistake next week.
