Explaining What Your App Does

Scene: A meetup. Someone asks Lin, "So what does your app do?" Lin starts with the tech stack and loses them in ten seconds. Her friend Raj shows her a better opening. The rule is simple: say who it is for before you say how it works.
Lin: I said, "It is a React app with a Postgres backend and a queue for jobs." Raj: I believe you, but that tells me nothing. Who uses it? Lin: Small clinics. They book patients. Raj: Good. Start there. Start with the person.
Lin: How about this? "Small clinics use our app to book patients. Before, they used paper and a phone. Now the whole day fits on one screen." Raj: That is it. I understood every word. And I do not work in health care.
Lin: What if they want more? Raj: Then they will ask. Save the tech stack for that moment. If they ask how it is built, answer in one sentence and stop. Let them pull the details out of you. Do not push them.
Build your line tonight. Fill in three blanks: who uses it, what they did before, what is better now. Say it out loud twice. You will use it at meetups, in interviews, and on your first day at a new job. Everyone asks this question.
