Negotiating Your Offer, Kindly

Offer

Scene: The recruiter calls with good news — an offer — and the real conversation begins. Recruiter: We'd love to have you join us. We're offering a base salary of ninety thousand, plus the standard benefits. How does that sound?

You: Thank you so much — I'm genuinely excited about this role and the team. Before I say yes, I'd like to talk through the numbers openly, if that's alright. I want us both to feel good about where we land. The offer is a strong start, and I think we're close.

Recruiter: Of course, that's completely normal. Tell me what you had in mind, and I'll see what's possible on our side.

You: Based on my research, similar roles in this city pay between ninety-five and a hundred and five thousand, and I'm bringing five years of directly relevant experience. Given that, I was hoping we could move the base closer to a hundred thousand. I'm not trying to squeeze you — I just want the number to reflect the market.

Recruiter: I appreciate you being straight with me. A hundred is above our band for this level, but I have some room. I could likely get you to ninety-six. The base is where we're tightest, honestly — that's the hardest number for me to move.

You: Ninety-six works, thank you. Since the base is tight, could we look at the total package instead? A signing bonus of five thousand would help bridge the gap, and I'd also like to push my start date back two weeks to finish my current project well. Would either of those be possible?

Recruiter: Both sound reasonable. Let me confirm the signing bonus with my manager, but the later start date is no problem at all. This is exactly how these talks should go — friendly and clear. I'll send the updated offer by Friday.

You: That's wonderful. Thank you for working with me on this — it means a lot, and it tells me a great deal about the team I'm about to join. I can't wait to start.
