Video calls are now a normal part of business life, but many people still feel nervous on them. Speaking a foreign language through a screen is harder than speaking face to face. The good news is that a few fixed phrases and simple habits can make you sound calm and professional. You do not need perfect English — you need to be prepared.

Before the call, test your camera, microphone, and internet connection. Join two minutes early. If you arrive first, use the time for small talk: "How is your week going?" These little moments build warm relationships, especially with colleagues you have never met in person.

In a group call, it can be hard to find a gap to speak. Do not wait for a perfect silence — it may never come. Use a short opener to take the floor politely: "May I jump in here?" or "Just to add one point." Once you start with a confident opener, people will let you finish.

When you miss something, ask right away. Native speakers talk fast, and audio quality is not always good. Say: "Sorry, could you repeat that?" or "Do you mean we should delay the launch?" Checking your understanding is not a weakness. It shows you care about getting things right.

Technical problems happen to everyone, so learn the standard phrases. "You are on mute." "Your connection is unstable." "Let me share my screen." If the call drops, do not panic. Rejoin and simply say: "Sorry, I lost you for a moment. Where were we?"

Before the call ends, confirm the next steps: "So I will send the draft by Wednesday, right?" Then follow up with a short message in the chat or by email. When your words on screen match your actions after the call, people learn that they can trust you — camera on or off.
