Writing a One-Page Marketing Brief

A marketing brief is the difference between a campaign where everyone pulls in the same direction and one where the designer, the copywriter, and the media buyer each quietly build a different thing. The best briefs fit on a single page — long enough to align everyone, short enough that people actually read it. This template gives you six fields to fill in, each with a sample you can copy and a note on how to get it right.
OBJECTIVE: Drive 500 free-trial signups for the new invoicing app among small-business owners, within the six-week campaign window, at a cost per signup below 15 dollars.
The objective is the field people get wrong most often, because they write a wish instead of a target. "Raise brand awareness" cannot be measured, so it cannot guide a single decision. Force a number, a group, a deadline, and a limit into one sentence. If you cannot tell at the end of the campaign whether you hit the objective, it is not an objective yet — it is a hope.
AUDIENCE: Owners of businesses with 1–10 employees who still invoice clients by hand in spreadsheets. Time-poor, not very technical, and frustrated by chasing late payments. They trust peer recommendations more than ads.
Describe one specific audience, not "everyone who needs invoicing." Include what they feel and how they decide, not just their job title. The line "they trust peer recommendations more than ads" is worth more than a demographic table, because it tells the media buyer to favour referrals and reviews over banner ads. A sharp audience field quietly makes every later choice easier.
KEY MESSAGE: "Get paid twice as fast — send a professional invoice in under a minute." Supporting proof: users cut their average payment wait from 30 days to 14. CHANNELS & BUDGET: 60% to accountant-community newsletters and referrals, 30% to search ads on "invoice software," 10% held for testing. Total: 12,000 dollars.
Pick one key message and let everything support it — three messages in a campaign means the audience remembers none. Attach one piece of proof so the claim is believable, not just loud. For channels, do not just list them; assign a share of budget to each, which forces you to bet on where your specific audience actually pays attention. Then close the brief with the last field: SUCCESS METRICS — signups, cost per signup, and trial-to-paid conversion, reviewed weekly — plus a TIMELINE with the launch date and one mid-point check to adjust spend. One page, and the whole team knows exactly what winning looks like.
